How to care for silk sheets

Silk sheets are a bit more difficult to care for than your regular cotton sheets.  1. The good news is that silk sheets made of high quality mulberry silk are less susceptible to bacteria and dust mites sticking on them.  Therefore, you do not have to clean them as often as cotton sheets since they tend to stay cleaner for a longer period of time.  If you wash cotton sheets every few weeks, then double the time for washing silk sheets.

As long as you care for silk sheets, you will get very long lasting use out of them.  Knowing what to do is key to keeping their shine and comfort.  Below is a list of tips to follow when caring for your sheets.  Follow these tips to help your silk sheets last longer and stay fresh.

1.  Do not machine wash the sheets too often.  If you do, put it on a delicate cycle or silk setting if your washer has one.  Also, try to use a washing bag so the fibers will not be pulled apart by the washer. The other alternative is to air the sheets outside in the shade, but using the warmth of the sun.

2.  Wash the sheets in warm water, not hot.

3.  Do not use shampoo or a detergent on the sheets.  The best thing is to wash them in water.  Detergents will damage the silk and may cause the sheets to look dull and worn.

4.  Dry the sheets on a washing line versus a dryer, but try to avoid putting them under direct sunlight.   If you use the dryer, use a lighter setting, do not use the high heat setting.

5.  If you spill or stain silk sheets, use a warm damp cloth with gentle sop to clean the area of the sheets.

6.  Protect silk sheets from the sun.  Colors can fade in the sun.  The glass from windows intensifies the destructive rays of the sun.  Therefore, close your drapes and protect the sheets from the sun.  Or cover the sheets with a bedspread to avoid direct sunlight getting on them.

7.  Do not bleach the sheets.  Bleach will damage the silk fibers and destroy the sheets.

8.  Try not to take the silk sheets to a dry cleaner.  If you do, request that they do not use any chemicals as the chemicals will damage the sheets.  Tell them the sheets are 100% silk and ask them what their process is for treating silk.  Usually, dry cleaners will have a different process for silk that they follow.
